Alumni Profile: Rabbi Shlomo Hochberg, ’70YC, ’73F, ’74RIETS, Mashgiach Ruchani, Stern College
Rabbi Hochberg has been serving as Mashgiach Ruchani and Judaic Studies faculty at Yeshiva University’s Stern College for Women for the past 20 years. As Mashgiach Ruchani, Rabbi Hochberg works to facilitate and inspire religious and personal growth in each student across the Stern College campus. A mathematics major, he graduated from Yeshiva College in 1970, followed by a year of learning at Yeshivat Hakotel, and received Semicha from RIETS in 1974.
Rabbi Hochberg wears many hats, including Rabbi of the Young Israel of Jamaica Estates, past President of the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA) and is among the founders of YESS! (Yeshiva Education for Special Students in Queens.) He and his wife Karen (Ulevitch) Hochberg, a 1973 Stern graduate and Valedictorian, consider these diverse organizations to be part of their extended family.
“My goal as Mashgiach Ruchani at Stern is to enable each student to develop in her own unique direction based upon her ideals and preferences. Stern students embrace and celebrate all aspects of life, and utilize them to serve Hashem and contribute meaningfully to the society around us.”
As a community rabbi, Rabbi Hochberg knows how important it is to keep in touch with students as they graduate and build their adult lives. “I am uplifted by the continual stream of Stern College alumnae who continue to include us in their lives in many ways; discussing halachic, hashkafic, and personal issues; sharing personal family events.”
At the upcoming YIJE dinner on Saturday evening, February 6, Rabbi and Mrs. Hochberg will be honored for 25 years of service to the community. “The YIJE family is a unique and diverse community where there is a conscious, non-judgmental effort to make everyone feel welcome. This is a perspective that I share with my students at Stern, which is also a unique and diverse community. Many of the friendships formed during these years will last a lifetime.”
