Yarchei Kallah Helps Rabbis Prepare for High Holy Days

Sep 14, 2005
-- Nearly 50 pulpit rabbis from the United States and Canada gathered under the auspices of YU’s Center for the Jewish Future in Teaneck, NJ, for a yarchei kallah (rabbinic conclave) in Teaneck, NJ, to help them prepare for the upcoming High Holy Days. The Sept. 12-14 event, at Cong. Keter Torah, offered participants opportunities for study, sharing, and growth related to the holidays of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot, and also to the many facets of rabbinic, congregational, and community life. Rabbi Jacob J. Schacter, senior scholar of CJF, served as facilitator. Rabbi Schacter heads the CJF division that provides continuing education to young rabbis and liaises with communal lay leaders. He offered his insights on an array of topics to rabbis, many of whom are just starting out in their careers. “Rabbi Schacter gave us a tremendous amount of resources to help out in a very difficult time of year,” said Rabbi Shmuel Silber, from Suburban Orthodox Congregation in Baltimore. “To have someone who’s been so successful in the rabbinate tell us what works and what doesn’t—for me that’s what made traveling so far worthwhile.” Other speakers at the yarchei kallah included Rabbi Kenneth Brander, CJF dean; Rabbi Moshe Bellows, a professional coach who assists individuals and companies to achieve and attain their full potential; and noted psychoanalyst Shana Yocheved Schacter. President Richard M. Joel and Chancellor Norman Lamm offered formal remarks. CJF plans to conduct similar gatherings during the coming year for a wide range of Jewish communal professionals including principals, teachers, and rabbis’ wives in communities across North America.
