Did you know that 56% of the energy use in the average home is for heating and cooling? By adjusting your thermostat, lower in the winter and higher in the summer, you can easily save energy and money while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The US Department of Energy estimates that you can save 10% of your energy bill by simply turning down the thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees for an 8-hour period. Imagine how much you would save by turning down your thermostat for 8 hours while you were at work.

“It is a common misconception that it takes more energy to heat up a cold house than it does to keep a house warm all the time. Turning down the thermostat will always save energy, as will turning up the air conditioner temperature setting,” states the US Department of Energy.

Last year Yeshiva University spent nearly $20 million on energy and utilities at its many buildings in Manhattan and the Bronx. Please do what you can to conserve. Here are a few recommendations that can apply both in the home and at the workplace:

1. Shades or blinds should be drawn at the end of the day when possible, to help keep heat inside the building. Conversely, when direct sunlight is available open the blinds/shades to allow the solar energy in.

2. Minimize opening your windows. If your area is overheated setback your thermostat. If overheating persists contact building management.

3. Electrical devices should be turned OFF when you are away from your work area for more than 5 minutes. (i.e. lights, fans, monitors, and other devices.) Computers should be turned OFF at the end of the day.

4. Stairs should be used instead of the elevator (i.e. when traveling less than 3 floors up or 5 floors down), if you are physically able to do so.

5. Report leaks, waste, dripping faucets, broken thermostats, or other equipment problems by contacting building management or the appropriate Yeshiva personnel listed below:
