On December 10th, CJF-RIETS invited our chaveirim Rabbi Zev Goldberg ’10R and Rabbi Yechiel Shaffer ’11R to shared their experiences in a workshop called “Job Placement after Smikhah.” Rabbi Goldberg recently assumed the position of Rabbi for the Young Israel of Ft. Lee in New Jersey, and Rabbi Shaffer recently assumed the position of Assistant Rabbi at Congregation Ohav Zedek (“OZ”) in Manhattan. Both searches and placements were through the Morris and Gertrude Bienenfeld Department of Jewish Career Development and Placement at Yeshiva University’s Center for the Jewish Future – RIETS. “We need our guys to have more hand on experiences so they are really ready for the placement process,” shared Rabbi Ronald Schwarzberg ’83R, Director of the Placement Office, who moderated the conversation. On December 29th, CJF-RIETS welcomed Rabbi Leib Bolel, Rabbi of Beth El Jacob Synagogue in Des Moines, Iowa who shared some of his experiences as a pulpit Rabbi in a smaller community, yet seeing over a 40% increase in membership. Also on December 29th, CJF-RIETS hosted four YU alumni (including two chaveirim) to help run a mock-interview session for senior RIETS Pulpit students. These volunteers had all previously been part of a synagogue’s rabbinic search committee. They played the role of a search committee and “interviewed” and then critiqued the RIETS students. Those who were not being “interviewed” were able to watch and also gain from seeing their peers answer questions. Everyone walked away with a clearer idea of how a search committee runs and what kinds of questions they need to be prepared to answer.
